I was very Happy and excited to share my ideas and thoughts on some Key Retail Cities with 12 City Managers from Denmark on Sept 17 in Amsterdam.

There is so much happening in the World of Retail and I am very focussed on the WOO= World Of Opportunities.
Whatever great ideas and interesting new techniques are, or will be, on the market soon. We always stay focused on what this will mean for a reluctant Customer, how this could change ‘the Game of Shopping’ and ‘the Ritual of Buying’.

What’s really good, What’s new, engaging and What might be Next…
For our presentation, we rented a beautiful room in the Berlage Building in the very heart of the City (a big thank you to Seats2Meets).

Thanks to Heidi Peterson from the Lifestyle and Design Cluster and Headstart Fashion House for inviting me and all the positive feedback I received from the participants; I hope to see you all soon in Denmark again.

Masterclass in Making Retail Personal

In our Masterclass we looked at Cities from a Customers angle and perspective..
Cities are Communities, Places you live in, Places you work in,
Places to meet, greet, Study, Visit, be active or play sports in.
Places you go to school, Go out, entertain, Go for shopping.

HAPPY Cities are Relevant and Customer-oriented (like amazon and Coolblue)
Easy access and parking at no, or normal prices.

Every City has it’s own retail problems and (dis)advantages.
The big problem behind Cities is the complexity of its owners, landlords, local authorities, politics, developers, big and smaller retailers and brands. It has always been so difficult to get ‘all noses in the same direction’, this is where I think good City Managers can have their job of a lifetime..

STREETAILING: It’s out there, feel the vibe….

Cities are like Brands and have to engage online too.
There is only one Focus for all participants in (re)creating an environment that will be very much appreciated by the Customer in many Forms and Formats.

It’s simple:
A (retail) City, like a Big Mall, or an interesting Store should be HAPPY Places and will attract HAPPY (read spending) Customers.
After the 1,5 hour Retail Master Class we went out to browse the city for another 3 hours to see and feel first hand what’s happening in one of the most exciting and engaging retail cities of Europe.

WE always love and will return to Amsterdam

Amsterdam is Fashion, Food and Fun all over.
Amsterdam is old and new at the same time, it is so alive and kicking, day and night.
For me, it is one of the most engaging retail destinations.

The Place to go
The Place to be
The Place to stay

MUST READ for CITY Planners:

A globe-trotting, eye-opening exploration of how cities can—and do—make us happier people

Charles Montgomery’s Happy City is revolutionizing the way we think about urban life.
After decades of unchecked sprawl, more people than ever are moving back to the city. Dense urban living has been prescribed as a panacea for the environmental and resource crises of our time. But is it better or worse for our happiness? Are subways, sidewalks, and condo towers an improvement on the car dependence of the suburbs?

What did 12 City managers teach me?

I learned from 12 City Managers that most of Today’s Retail Questions seem to be global.
That browsing major retail cities and destinations is not only my thing…
Sustainability and carbon footprint are more important than ever.
That Trump will never be able to buy Greenland.
That on New Year’s eve the Danes have to stand upon their chairs and jump into the New Year……or into the nearest hospital.

Had a great Day with the Danes…….very engaging, made some new friends
